Critical Illness Explained
Critical or Serious illness cover is a similar concept to life cover however it pays a tax-free lump sum in the event of being diagnosed with a specified condition, things such as Cancer, Stroke and Heart attack to name a few. Receiving a lump sum in the event of a critical or serious illness allows recovery to be made without financial worry and this kind of cover was designed around the recovery theory. Prior to critical illness cover people were getting seriously ill and then due to commitments, returning to work immediately which ultimately meant future health issues reoccurring and mortality reducing. It was South African doctor Marius Barnard who created the Critical illness cover concept and there is a very useful video to watch in relation to this, click the above link.
Critical Illness Explained
Ultimately you don’t have to die to benefit from this kind of cover, in fact most will live a very long life post anything major happening to them these days, the only difference is that the ones with this kind of cover might be mortgage or debt free which means less worry about the material things and more focus on the things that really matter – family, health and well-being.
Some insurers will also pay out on a severity basis which means a policy could pay out more than once as opposed to the more traditional policies pay out just once. There are also extra add on benefits that can be added such as enhanced Children's cover, Fracture cover and Global Treatment however these are provider dependant.

As with all insurance policies, conditions and exclusions apply
